Research in the Bornscheuer group aims at the development of biocatalysts for the chemical and pharmaceutical area, lipid modification, plastic degradation and degradation of algal polysaccharides. A major focus has been in the past 25 years the development of methods for protein engineering by rational and evolutive design strategies including the use of bioinformatic tools and high-throughput screening methods. This aims to understand sequence/structure/function relationships of enzymes (numerous enzymes from various classes have been studied) as well as improving enzymes for applications with respect to e.g., substrate scope, stereoselectivity, pH and temperature profile, stability etc. In addition, enzyme cascade reactions as well as the design and combination of chemo- and biocatalysts are studied, which is the central theme within ComBioCat.

Who are we?

We are a good dozen young researchers and their supervisors and we develop novel catalysts and reactions for a sustainable, green chemistry. In doing so, we combine different approaches from our fields: Chemistry, Biochemistry and Protein Engineering as well as Plasma Physics.
